Designed by Richard T. Broderick of Sparkitecture Design Solutions. This 2500 square foot cliff house is elegantly sited on a commanding bluff with ocean and vivid San Juan Islands sunsets. The site falls in a number of steep intervals onto a lower terrace before tumbling further still into a lush tangle of brush and evergreens bordering protected wetlands below. The structure opted for simple, site-informed massing – a trio of stacked rectangular boxes, one more elongated than the last, wedged into the cliffside. The three floors were arranged according to a distinct functional hierarchy – living/social areas on the main first level; master suite in the middle incorporating two separate walk-in closets, a private outdoor enclosed deck with hot tub and an adjacent media room. Guest room, office, laundry, and utility space are on the lower level. The main floor was designed to take full advantage of the view and sun path. The shed roof and three-sided wrapping window wall tilt up to an 18 foot peak with an outward thrust that suggests a structure literally leaping off a cliff.

To complement its striking form, the elevations employ a geometric rhythm of colored trim boards in a lively striping pattern that extends throughout the interior mill-work and even into the window mullion design. Sustainability was embodied in choices such as bamboo flooring, a broad palette of recycled materials, radiant heat, energy/water conserving fixtures and natural ventilation.

Fifteen paint colors were used to exploit the natural surroundings – apricot to amplify the resonant sunset; sage to mirror the verdant MB view. Extensive use of native hardwoods (fir, cedar, pine) for trim and “built-ins” evoke the Pacific Northwest’s most enduring and identifiable natural assets.

The sloping topography afforded a fortuitous opportunity to create a series of distinct stepped terraces: some grass, some landscaped and some natural stone, responding to different outdoor functions and orientation.
